April 4—All-Star Lance Lynn left Saturday’s game against the Diamondbacks with right knee discomfort, after pitching to Corbin Carroll in the 4th in Scottsdale. Lynn was on the IL from August 29 to September 11 last year with inflammation of the same knee. Lynn will undergo a short surgery tomorrow to repair a slightly torn tendon. He will miss at least four weeks, and possibly as many as eight weeks for recovery.

Coors Field – 7:00 pm CDT
The matchups (with season-to-date home runs, through July 6) are:
#1 Shohei Ohtani (31) vs. #8 Juan Soto (10) #2 Joey Gallo (21) vs. #7 Trevor Story (11) #3 Matt Olson (20) vs. #6 Trey Mancini (15) #4 Salvador Pérez (20) vs. #5 Pete Alonso (15)
Round 1
Trey Mancini (24 HR) edges out Matt Olson (23 HR).
Trevor Story (20 HR) edges out Joey Gallo (19 HR). Story slams one 518′, beating the previous Home Run Derby record of 513′ (Aaron Judge).
Defending Champ Pete Alonso (35 HR) beats Salvador Perez (28 HR).
After tying the match at 22, then tying the tie-breaker at 28, Juan Soto wins in the “swing off” with 31 total HRs to Shohei Ohtani’s 28. Soto launches a 520′ bomb, breaking the distance record that Story had just set. Ohtani hits all of the highest-velocity drives of the night at 117 MPH.
Semifinals
Mancini (13) beats Story (10).
Alonso (16) beats Soto (15).
Finals
Both sluggers go into their bonus time with 17, but Alonso slams 6 more to Mancini’s 5 to win his second consecutive Home Run Derby.
The American League wins 5-2, its eighth consecutive win and fifteenth win across the past eighteen All-Star Games. Japanese-born Angels starter Shohei Ohtani—who qualified for the ASG as both pitcher and hitter—books the win. Australian-born White Sox closer Liam Hendricks makes the save. Canadian-born/Dominican-raised Vladimir “Vladito” Guerrero, Jr. earns MVP, delivering a 468′ solo home run in the 3rd and a run-scoring groundout in the 5th. Vladito and his father, Vladamir Guerrero, Sr. (2006), are the third father-son duo to hit home runs in All-Star Games, along with Bobby (1973) and Barry (1998) Bonds, and Ken Griffey, Sr. (1980) and Jr. (1992). Three-Game Series vs. Houston Astros
White Sox win series 2-1
July 16, 1:10 pm—At six hours before the start of Game 1, the White Sox have not yet announced probable pitchers for any games in the series. Update, 2:30 pm—Probable pitchers for the series have been posted.
➤ Tim Anderson extends his hitting streak to 13 consecutive games.
Dylan Cease pitches well, striking out 10 across 5 ⅔ innings (6 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 1 HBP), but Lance McCullers, Jr. pitches even better, allowing just 2 hits and striking out 10 in 7.0 IP (1 ER, 2 BB, 1 HBP). In his first appearance since being activated from the IL (yesterday), Aaron Bummer whips his first pitch at the head of Michael Brantley (missed), then lets Brantley single, then allows Brantley to steal 2B and 3B on two wild pitches, then manages to hit Abraham Toro in just ⅔ of an inning. Tough day at the office! Wearing the all-black City Connect uniforms, the White Sox start strong. Dylan Cease pitches a 1-2-3 first inning, striking out both #2 Michael Brantley and #3 Yuli Gurriel, then retires #3, #4, and #5 in the Astros lineup on swinging strikes in the 2nd. Lead-off batter Tim Anderson triples on the first pitch in the bottom of the 1st, and Yoán Moncada (#2 in the lineup) bats him in on the first pitch with a double. But the offense was all downhill from there. The White Sox score just 1 R on 3 H. Watch game highlights from mlb.com:

Thursday, April 29, 2021 at 7:10 pm CDT Guaranteed Rate Field – 7-inning game Dylan Cease, RHP vs. Tigers / Matthew Boyd, LHP
DEFENSE: Dylan Cease delivers what is surely the best start of his career, pitching a beautiful 3-hit, 7-inning shutout, striking out 9 with no walks. Cease dominates (he’s 7-0 against the Tigers) with an unpredictably varied fastball and effective off-speed pitching. His synergy with veteran catcher Yasmani Grandal is magnificent. OFFENSE: The White Sox score the first 7 runs on singles—4 in the 2nd, 3 in the 5th. But the 2-reliever, 10-at-bat bottom of the 5th inning is not over. Yoán Moncada (3-run HR) and Yermín Mercedes (solo HR–449’) extend the lead to 11-0—all before Alex Lange can get the last out. Rookie Andrew Vaughn goes 3 for 4. Watch game highlights from mlb.com:

Friday, April 30, 2021 at 7:10 PM CDT Guaranteed Rate Field Dallas Keuchel, LHP vs. Indians / Shane Bieber, RHP
Turns out that 3 ER, 1 BB and 11 SO on 6.0 IP is a *bad* day for Not Justin (now 3-2, 2.76, 68). Dallas Keuchel gives up 4 ER, issues 4 BB, and strikes out 4 in his 6.0 IP. Sox are first on the board when Yermín Mercedes scores on a Luis Robert 2B (officially E8). Cleveland scores 4 runs in the 3rd (1B with 2 RBI, GO with 1 RBI, 1B wih 1 RBI off Keuchel), and the Sox take 2 back (Tim Anderson and Yoán Moncada 1Bs with 1 RBI each), making it 4-3 Cleveland until José Ramírez hits a solo HR off Evan Marshall in the 8th.Watch game highlights from mlb.com:

Saturday, May 1, 2021 at 3:05 pm CDT Guaranteed Rate Field Lance Lynn, RHP vs. Indians / Triston McKenzie, RHP
Indians starter Triston McKenzie strikes out 5 of the first 6, then loads the bases with White Sox on BBs with 2 outs, before issuing a 4th run-scoring BB in the 2nd. Adding insult to injury, Tim Anderson launches a Grand Slam, making it 5-0 Sox. McKenzie answers by striking out Adam Eaton to end the inning. McKenzie strikes out 6 of 10 in the first 2 innings, but ends up down 5-0. Ouch. Lance Lynn pitches beautifully through 4 ⅔, then gives up 2 runs before making the 3rd out. In the 5th, Lynn retires 3 but lets an Austin Hedges solo HR through —2 SO, 2 BB, 4 H, 3 ER on the day. Reliever-starter Michael Kopech serves up a solid 3 innings (3 SO, 0 BB, 1 H, 0 R), lowering his ERA to 1.45. Aaron Bummer closes out the 9th, striking out 2 and fielding a soft GO for the win. L, 5-0, 15-12 (.556), L1 | LP: Lucas Giolito (1-3, 4.99) | Game 27

Louis Robert to Injured List (Again)

His logical replacement, Adam Engel, continues to recover from a strained right hamstring sustained in spring training. Engel and rookie Andrew Vaughn will likely share the starting center field position.
Dallas Keuchel starts due to Carlos Rodón upset stomach. After a solid 5-inning performance in which he retired 12 in a row after giving up a 2-run HR, Dallas Keuchel loads the bases with the first three batters in the 6th, before being relieved by Evan Marshall. Codi Heuer 4 SO in 2 ⅓ IP to win. Adam Eaton 3-run HR.
